Life-Size Box Crafted “Avengers” Costumes
These characters look like the Cubeecraft paper toys. The “Box Corp Avengers” are 10 life-size, painted costumes made by Stephen Larkworthy and a team of people. The outfits were worn at the Dragon*Con Parade 2010.
Notes about “Box Corp Avengers” (from an email sent by Stephen Larkworthy to Illusion 360, October 15th, 2010):
The box heroes are indeed my crew. I build all of the suits and, so far, all of the accessories, weapons, etc. I cut eyes, mouths and ears into every head according to what I think the character ought to look like and then I let them go. Each person who joins up gets their suit in a giant folder (flat) and then they glue them up and, to the extent that they want to, paint them out. They’re all hand painted. For our first big outing (Dragon Con 2010, though a friend and I also were there in 09), I ended up detailing about half of the suits. Notable exceptions were: Jared Cain who painted that amazing Thor, Ashley Brammer who painted Ms. Marvel and helped Chadwick Halbritter paint Hawkeye, and Kaoru Julian who painted that great smirking Loki for her husband John. My brother David did his Wolverine.
All that said, we feel like very much a team. Everyone behind the cardboard is especially talented (we have musicians, designers, an executive chef, a guitar maker, and an architect) and it has been fantastic fun to run around together. At first we thought we would be dancing around in these suits like jesters, but now we dance around proudly.
