Amazing 3D Immersion Technology

http://www.vimeo.com/4177769

There are images that give us a peek into the future. This video is an example of where we are heading in technology. 3D immersion could be used for gaming, traveling the world (virtually), or other. It is funny to see the reaction of the man experimenting it, because to him everything looks real!

Video by IDEO lab. 3D Technology by Eon Reality.

Notes about 3D Immersion from IDEO lab:

A simple, featherweight headset, a 10′ x 10′ x 10′ white room, and $600,000 worth of projector and computer equipment, combined with the smarts of the folks at Eon Reality, results in one insanely real experience.

Update: Watch video: “Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote” by Johnny Lee. Thanks to Notanobelisk for the tip.

Wow, this really looks like something I would want! ;D

    Definitely Fahrenheit 451.

Nice! Imagine playing WoW with this?!

  5. on Apr 20, 2009 at 5:00 am Sam

    I can’t imagine playing Wow.

We played around with caves like this at work (5 sided: 3 walls plus floor and ceiling) ). Turns out they look cool and make great demonstrators – but apart from that they are exceptionally useless (for anything).

Too unwieldy for gaming and for scientific work 3D visualization does not add much in the way of information (except the ‘wow’ factor which does not enter into scientific publications)

Colossal waste of space and money.

    WoW would still suck.

Can’t wait to watch my Nrop in this!!!

Amazing technology. Unfortunately, I have almost no depth perception. Most 3D type devices don’t work at all for me. About the only 3D effect that does at all is the Imax 3d stuff.

Still, I’d love to try this.

    Truly amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Really appreciate it.

Amazing experimentation. Hope this gives way to a new kind of virtual reality gaming.
However, the guys laughing in the background are annoying…

They need to make the floor into an omnidirectional treadmill so you can “walk” forever.

To science guy, I’d just like to say that that’s exactly what was said about so many technological advancements, including the computer.

And you may be right that this technology, at the early stage it’s in, is nothing more than “wow,” but I truly believe that it could develop into something amazing and extremely useful.

To the guy who said its exceptionally useless (for anything).

    only one word:
    PORN

If you take a look at the internet you will know I’m right.

Not to mention Eddo has also already offered a solution to one of the main problems ^.^

Now make it a round room that can revolve in any direction that also controls the movement of the person in it and you’ve got the coolest most awesome video game controller/display that has ever existed…

  17. on Apr 20, 2009 at 8:51 pm fenderflip

And Harrison’s got a good point there science guy =)

They use this stuff at GM for modeling cars in 3D. I was on a tour (my father works there) many years ago and they had us in a room with sharks floating by, it was really intense.

That’s really cool, especially incorporating an entire room to work the effect. For internet demonstrational purposes I think it would be much more effective to mount the placement sensors to the camera, so that the perspective would change relative to what we see. I’ve seen something like that done with Johnny Lee’s Wii “headtracking VR display” and it gave viewers a great feel for the application of the technology. OK … but does it work with pron?

  21. on Apr 21, 2009 at 10:17 am jp

I could see this only being useful for games similar to time crysis, virtua cop, or house of the dead… but really cool!

  22. on Apr 21, 2009 at 6:07 pm ryan

Cool, but It would probably make me seasick.

Notice the polarized 3D glasses he’s wearing. This means that to him it actually looks like true 3D instead of just a panorama. It’s like the kind of 3D movie where you have to give the glasses back at the end.

So, its like a CAVE system?

lols@ Greg : So you want to see around the people doing *orn ?

  26. on Jun 20, 2009 at 1:47 pm Mackey D

I know the army are/have developing something like this, but its built into a bubble, so the person using it can move basically forever

So!… what is reality anyways? If our senses can be fooled or manipulated. Red or blue? That is the question for us consumers!

Soon our homes will have such a technology, no more rainy days…fake walls and stuff…and who knows maybe surrogates!
