Ranchers Burn the Flint Hills of Kansas
These photographs were taken by documentary photographer Jim Richardson. The top image shows “fires that quickly burn off the old, dry growth and allow the new Spring grass to flourish. The burning also battles the incursion of young trees, the natural enemy of the grasses in their fight for territory.”

[...] I’ve been working for National Geographic magazine for 25 years and a contributing editor for National Geographic Traveler. Besides my work on cultures and environmental issues my work includes documentary projects on rural life in my native Kansas—including my 30 year project on Cuba, Kansas—[...] which has twice been featured on CBS News Sunday Morning. I also do photographer workshops for National Geographic Expeditions and travel photography seminars for National Geographic Traveler. My wife and I own and operate Small World Gallery.
