It is Gouache, my dear, sir

You’ve seen digital art mimicking traditional painting, and at first sight it may be challenging to know exactly the type of medium. However, it isn’t that common to see paintings being misinterpreted for 3D computer generated graphics. Look closely at each image in post, do they look like gouache?

Paintings by Japanese artist Kazuki Takamatsu.

While these paintings might have been painted by hand with gouache, it’s pretty clear that the images were first modeled in 3D software, rendered with some sort of diffused lighting effect, and used as reference for these paintings. It’s just not humanly possible to create something like this without reference!

Most paintings require some time of reference (e.g. live model, computer print out, drawn sketch…), so this isn’t any different. What makes it unique is that it is painted and not just generated by computer which would be a lot less work. The artist took the time to make it appear digital, although using traditional technique such as paint.

    Thanks for the comments!

Amazing, never seen anything like it. Why paint in black when you can paint in white?

These are really clever, I couldn’t believe they were painted at first. I’d love to own one of these.

They appear to be based on Z-depth maps of 3D CG models. These are greyscale images in which lighter colors represent parts of objects closer to the camera and darker colors are further away; generally useful for compositing multiple 3D elements. But they do have a beauty all their own too!

yeah, they’re well done but why do they have to be naked prepubescent girls? I find the subject matter offensive, frankly.
