Layered Worlds

Charles Clay uses layers of paper to create volume and depth–in attempt to make his art interactive for the spectator. In his words: “If I actually cut the paper and make it come out, and you can go in and out of it, this is actual creation of the world. So you can kind of sustain your disbelief, and put yourself into this environment. So you feel like you’re a part of this world.” *
Notes from the artist (from interview “Charles Clay” at Art and You Blog *):
The all aspect of the world is musically based. I used to be a precaution instructor, a music instructor. So think of it as this world set as underneath others worlds, and they run parallalel to one another. So this world functions in the same way than our does, but there’s no hate, no anger. It’s very playful, interactive. They all kind of based their reality on our own, but take everything that we do wrong, and make it right.

Wow this looks really cool. Would love to have one hanging in my office.
Very nice, but I’d hate to clean it… perhaps if it was me, I’d have a sheet of perspex or glass over the front just to keep the dust out.
There was this guy in missoula who was doing these pieces (mounted under glass) with just a bevel and matte cutter no lazer no computer aided cutter.. etc. his name was ???? grrrrr.. all white matt board. very cool circa 2002..
