Absolutely Amazing Music Made from a Tree!

Diego Stocco sends me a personal email telling me he used a tree as a musical instrument. Yet again, he’s effectively selected objects and vegetation from our surrounding to create music. Simply, amazing work!

Also, check out past posts: “The Making of “The Conduit Shaping†Soundtrack,” “Typosonic Machine,” and “Music from Sand.”

Notes about this project from Diego:

In the garden of my house there’s a tree with lots of randomly grown twigs. It looks odd and nice at the same time. One day I asked myself if I could create a piece of music with it.

To tune the tree I picked a fundamental note and tuned the twigs by trimming them with a pencil sharpener. I used two Røde NT6 and a NTG-2 as microphones, combined with a customized stethoscope.

I recorded the tracks live on a Pro Tools LE system. I didn’t use any synthesizer or sampler to create or modify the sounds. All the sounds come from playing the tree, by bowing the twigs, shaking the leaves, playing rhythms on the cortex and so on.

Haha you’re a tripper dude, I love it!! That’s easily as good as anything I’ve heard on the radio lately… You should do a backyard remix for 50 Cent

Not bad but not really that impressive. Just pulling a bunch of sounds you can make from the tree then mixing them together is a novel idea but I’m not all that impressed cause you can do that with mainly anything.

I could make a “music from my dryer” and just bang on it making different noises then pull them together to create a cool sounding beat.

Hey a, you ever heard of art? You may be ABLE to do it, but if you DON’T do it, then it doesn’t matter.

By the way, I liked this a lot. It’s creative and has a nice beat and reminds me of the jungle.

There’s a rumor that this tree can absolutely shred a guitar.

You’re kidding me, right? This dude makes music from a tree?

Get a job. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

This is terrible. It starts out like OK maybe it will sound decent, but then the violin bow comes and and FFFUUUUUU. This is barely music.
